He defeated the incumbent, President Lazarus Chakwera, who received just 33%. Mutharika, once a law professor, led the country from 2014 to 2020 before losing to Chakwera. He now faces the challenge of managing an economy in crisis, marked by severe fuel shortages and a scarcity of foreign currency in the impoverished southern African nation.

The South African Constitutional Court has issued a landmark ruling, determining that husbands can now legally adopt their wives' surnames, effectively overturning a long-standing prohibition. The case was brought before the court by two couples, who argued that the existing law, which restricted men's surname choices, constituted gender-based discrimination. In its ruling, the court described the law as a “colonial import” that should be removed from South African law. Parliament will now be required to amend the Births and Deaths Registration Act to align with the ruling.

A "framework" agreement has been reached between the US and China that could lead to US ownership of TikTok's American operations, according to the US Treasury Secretary. Scott Bessent indicated that this deal was forged during trade discussions in Madrid, adding that Presidents Trump and Xi Jinping were expected to finalize it on Friday. While the US side was optimistic, China cautioned that any final agreement must safeguard the interests of Chinese companies.

Irfaan Ali was officially sworn in on Sunday for a second term as president of Guyana, reinforcing his leadership of the oil-rich South American nation. Backed by the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic, Ali secured 36 parliamentary seats in the September 1 election, strengthening his majority by three compared to the last term.
