Amazon Prime Video has officially greenlit an animated series adaptation of the hit webcomic Lore Olympus, marking a major milestone for one of the most popular digital comics of the past decade. The project is based on the Webtoon series created by Rachel Smythe and will bring her modern retelling of Greek mythology to a global streaming audience.
According to Variety, the animated adaptation will be written and showrun by Julia Cooperman, whose previous credits include Colony, Willow, and The Winchesters. Cooperman will also serve as an executive producer on the series. The show is being produced by Webtoon Productions and The Jim Henson Company in partnership with
Amazon MGM Studios, bringing together several major players in animation and storytelling.
In a statement, Cooperman expressed her excitement about the project and her long standing connection to Greek mythology. She shared that reading Lore Olympus reminded her of the lasting power of these ancient stories and how strongly they continue to resonate in modern storytelling. She described the series as a frisky, soulful, and timely reimagining of the story of Persephone and Hades, one that honors the source material while opening it up to new audiences and longtime fans alike.
Additional executive producers include David Madden and Sydney Bright from Webtoon Productions, along with Aron Levitz. Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford will executive produce for The Jim Henson Company, with Delaney Shiokari serving as the executive in charge of production. Lisa Henson highlighted that Lore Olympus offers a fresh and relevant approach to the myth of Persephone and praised its vibrant world building. She also noted that this series marks The Jim Henson Company’s first adult animated series, calling the partnership with Webtoon a true privilege.
The official logline for Lore Olympus invites viewers to witness what the gods do after dark. The series explores friendships, secrets, gossip, wild parties, and forbidden love, presenting the gods as deeply human in their flaws and desires. Described as stylish and immersive, the show retells one of mythology’s most enduring stories, The Taking of Persephone, in a way that has never been done before.
Webtoon Productions president David Madden emphasized the strength of the global fandom built by Lore Olympus, noting its stunning artwork, rich storytelling, and unforgettable characters. Since its debut in 2017, the webcomic has accumulated more than 1.8 billion global views, making it one of Webtoon’s most successful titles. Development on the animated adaptation has been underway since 2019.
The series will join Amazon Prime Video’s growing slate of adult animated shows, which already includes adaptations such as The Legend of Vox Machina, Invincible, and Hazbin Hotel. Melissa Wolfe, head of animation for Amazon MGM Studios, stated that Lore Olympus redefined how mythology can look and feel for a new generation. She expressed enthusiasm about bringing the beloved story to Prime Video’s global
audience and praised the collaboration between Cooperman, Smythe, Webtoon Productions, and The Jim Henson Company.
The Lore Olympus animated series is expected to debut in 2026, offering fans a new way to experience Smythe’s iconic world while staying true to the story that made it a cultural phenomenon.
